Full Stack Developer (React/Redux,Node.js)

Job Introduction

We’ve started a brand new development  team at the Trinity Mirror, called Emerging Products, which operates entirely lean, Innovation driven, and focus relentlessly on Innovating fast to discover new business models in the Publishing Industry.

The Industry is at a very exciting and interesting point in time. It is undergoing a radical shift from purely editorial processes, to synergetic processes where editorial teams are heavily aided by technology to allow them to deliver richer information than humans can do unassisted, faster. What happens next will determine the future of media. The speed at which we fail, learn, and adapt is critical. Whoever gets this right, will dominate the industry for decades to come.

Our first successful experiment is a product called InYourArea.co.uk, a hyper-local news and data aggregator that shows you what is happening in your neighbourhood, and connect you with your neighbours.

Role Responsibility

You will maintain and extend our existing back end, mostly consisting of REST API’s and AWS Lambda functions, mostly built in Node.js and Python.

You will also be expected to become involved in front end development, which is currently built in React (this might change in future). You will also have the opportunity, if you show an aptitude for it, to get involved in native app development and/or machine learning.

You will work closely with:

1.    the head of engineering,

2.    the head of product,

3.    and a few other back end, full stack, and machine learning engineers.

We are a small and cohesive team, and we always optimise for shortest time to market, which often results in tech debt being introduced on purpose, and factored out once a feature has been validated. You have to be comfortable with this style of working.

The Ideal Candidate

You need to be fluent in Javascript and Node.js (Python is a plus)

An understanding and preference for Functional Programming is highly desirable.

We use AWS extensively, and we expect all engineers to provision their own resources (using Cloudformation), so some knowledge of AWS will help. We expect to mentor you in this aspect though.

You will design, build, deploy, and maintain complete services. We will help you achieve this level as quickly as possible, but we expect you to be comfortable with this expectation.

You are excited by rapid, lean development procedures with very little administrative overhead (think of a mixture between Lean and Programmer Anarchy). You strive to receive real feedback from what you’ve built in the form of real user stats, as quickly as possible after you’ve built it, and you relentlessly do whatever you can to drive this time-to-feedback downward. You’re comfortable deploying changes to Production as often as possible.

You are comfortable with the fact that your decisions and the result of your work will be proven wrong by stats, and adapt very quickly.

You will own your work with pride.
