As part of a UK-wide ground-breaking initiative between the BBC and regional publishers, we are seeking to recruit three Local Democracy Reporters based across Devon/Cornwall, initially for a two-year period.

About the Scheme:

This unique scheme is designed to increase coverage and scrutiny of local authorities across the UK. Funded by the BBC and run by media publishers, the reporters will offer in-depth coverage of our local authorities. The key aim will be to ensure deep scrutiny of the way our local government institutions operate, decisions they make and how they spend public money. Successful applicants will play a vital part in launching the scheme and ensuring it is a success, with the aim of expanding it in future years.

Acting as a trusted source of news and ambassador for the scheme, the successful applicant will be adept at identifying issues and stories buried in council agendas which need to be brought to the public’s attention. Reporting to the local Editor, this role offers the chance to get involved at the start of a high-profile initiative and help shape the future of the scheme.

The newsroom:

Our editorial team is based in three main newsrooms in the cities of Truro, Exeter and Plymouth. The Western Morning News is the morning regional title that is the umbrella title for all of Trinity Mirror’s newspapers and websites in Devon and Cornwall. It has three sister websites, Devon Live, Cornwall Live and Plymouthherald.co.uk, as well as one daily sister title, the Plymouth Herald, and seven weekly titles – the North Devon Journal, the Exeter Express and Echo, the Mid Devon Gazette, and the Torquay Herald Express, as well as in Cornwall, the West Briton the Cornishman and the Cornish Guardian. All of our titles are deeply rooted in the communities they serve, with the West Briton more than 200 years old and the WMN with a history that dates from 1860. All are regarded as leaders in their communities and have been the focal point for scores of community-led campaigns over the years.
